Thursdays in this corner of the Universo Pugilistico revolve around my sack—my bulging, bulbous, aching sack—and the gooey, salty truth found within. So, sit back, close your eyes, pull back your hair, and prepare for this week’s money shot of wisdom. This week, we delve into comments and questions about Shakur Stevenson, William Zepeda, and Nate Diaz-Jorge Masvidal.
Shakur’s Treatment
Hi Magno.
Shakur Stevenson has parted ways with Top Rank and ESPN, and I think it’s for the best. They mistreated Shakur in the way they represented him in his final fights as his contract was ending. Their behavior on Saturday was particularly disrespectful, showing fans leaving his fight in a classless and petty manner. It was frankly disgusting.
You’ve already discussed where Shakur might go in free agency, but my question is about ESPN and Top Rank. Where did they go wrong with Shakur, and why couldn’t they maximize his potential? How much blame lies with Shakur versus the promoter and network?
I believe he will move on to secure those big fights that eluded him at Top Rank/ESPN, proving that it was their fault, not his.
– Clyde
Hey Clyde.
The treatment of Shakur was truly unjust. The actions taken that night felt like a deliberate attack. Cutting to fans leaving the venue was cruel. Even the ESPN Boxing site dropping Shakur in their rankings seemed spiteful, simply because he hadn’t re-signed with Top Rank. This should serve as a warning to all fighters under contract—if you leave, they may act vindictively to harm your career. It was unprofessional and petty.
As for what went wrong, I don’t think anything necessarily went awry. Shakur delivered the highest main event boxing ratings on ESPN in 2024 and maintained impressive numbers as a main event fighter. Top Rank reportedly offered him a substantial deal to re-sign, showing his value to them.
However, there were missed opportunities in the Stevenson-Top Rank/ESPN partnership. Despite his potential for stardom after standout performances, Top Rank failed to elevate him. While Shakur’s style may have hindered his growth, the promotion seemed punitive after his move to 130 pounds and neglected to match him against top-level opponents.
Shakur shares some blame for not adapting his style to be more entertaining and engaging. He must show more flair and excitement to attract fans. While he may land significant fights as a free agent, he should focus on being more entertaining to reach a broader audience.
Nate Diaz-Jorge Masvidal
Hi Paul.
I’d love to hear your thoughts on the Nate Diaz-Jorge Masvidal boxing match and your opinion on celebrities and MMA stars entering the ring. The fight was compelling, and the event was decent overall. I noticed you didn’t mention it in your articles.
– John W.
Hey John.
I did mention Diaz-Masvidal on Twitter, recognizing it as the best main event among Stevenson-Harutyunyan and Zepeda-Cabrera. I have no issue with celebrity boxing or MMA stars entering boxing contests. These matchups can generate excitement and introduce new fans to the sport. Diaz-Masvidal was entertaining and competitive.
Zepeda’s Title Shot
Hey Paul.
It’s disappointing that a fighter like William Zepeda, ranked no. 1 in all sanctioning bodies, struggles to secure a title shot. If you were Golden Boy, how would you push for a title fight for Zepeda? He deserves it!
– Juan Blancas Soto
Hey Juan.
In terms of competition and feasibility, facing WBO champion Denis Berinchyk is the easiest route. However, winning the WBO title could make it harder for other champions to face Zepeda. Remaining no. 1 contender may be beneficial for now. It wouldn’t be surprising if Zepeda is being considered for an interim or regular title by a sanctioning body.
