Shams Charania is attracting attention from both NBC and ESPN, as reported by sources. Charania’s current contract with The Athletic is expiring, making him available just as ESPN is in search of a replacement for Adrian Wojnarowski in their lead NBA newsbreaker role.
Notably, Charania has the strong support of Pat McAfee, who has ties with ESPN and holds influence within the network. Charania and McAfee have a history of collaboration, with Charania making frequent appearances on McAfee’s show.
The Athletic is also keen on keeping Charania on board.
Steven Ginsberg, executive editor of The Athletic, expressed confidence in Charania, stating, “We’re not at all surprised by the interest in Shams, whose indispensable coverage of the NBA and its key players continues to set the pace. We’re proud to have him as our colleague and are committed to ensuring he stays with The Athletic for years to come.”
