Former WNBA star Sheryl Swoopes has made her feelings about Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark clear, and when Clark was named Time’s Athlete of the Year, Swoopes couldn’t resist sharing her thoughts.
During an episode of the Gil’s Arena podcast, Swoopes discussed Clark receiving the Athlete of the Year title.
“I’m not surprised,” said Swoopes. “I am curious about who the other candidates were. However, it is significant that she is the first WNBA player to win TIME Magazine’s Athlete of the Year.”
Swoopes then expressed doubts about Time’s selection criteria for choosing Clark.
“My question is about the criteria… Is it based solely on her performance on the court? She did have a standout year. Or is it more about the impact she had on the game this season?”
Swoopes went on to suggest other athletes who she believed could have been chosen for the cover, including A’ja Wilson, LeBron James, Katie Ledecky, and Simone Biles.
While Wilson is a prominent figure in the WNBA, Clark’s influence on the league, highlighted by her winning the WNBA Rookie of the Year award, likely contributed to her receiving the Athlete of the Year honor.
