Shohei Ohtani made history by breaking Ichiro Suzuki’s single-season stolen base record for a Japanese-born player against the Colorado Rockies on Friday night. With his 57th stolen base, Ohtani solidified his place among the greatest base runners in baseball history, further adding to the legend of the two-way player.
The path to achieving this record became feasible as Ohtani tied with manager Dave Roberts. It all started when Ohtani singled off Miami Marlins left-hander Ryan Weathers in his first at-bat on Wednesday, Sept.18, and stole second base on the first pitch to Mookie Betts.
Earning his 49th stolen base, Ohtani equaled Roberts for the second-most stolen bases in a single season by a Japanese-born player in Major League history. Despite not pitching this season due to undergoing his second Tommy John surgery, Ohtani’s accomplishment is remarkable.
Looking ahead, Ohtani faces a challenging task to surpass Maury Wills in holding the Dodgers franchise record for stolen bases in a single season. Wills stole 104 bases in 1962 and 94 in the 1965 season.
The balance between hitting home runs and stealing bases is a unique aspect. Juan Pierre stole 64 bases for the Dodgers in 2007 without hitting a single home run. While hitting home runs diminishes the opportunities to steal bases, Ohtani’s speed and power combination set him apart.
Reflecting on Ohtani’s versatility, Pierre expressed a mix of admiration and jealousy, acknowledging the game-changing impact Ohtani has had. His ability to excel both in speed and power has revolutionized the game.
