Shohei Ohtani, the Los Angeles Dodgers superstar, had an unforgettable first season with the franchise after signing a 10-year, $700 million deal. Many doubted the team’s ability to reach the World Series, let alone win it.
The Dodgers had suffered postseason setbacks for years, but Ohtani’s arrival brought a sense of change. Could one player truly carry an entire team?
The answer is both yes and no. While Ohtani didn’t single-handedly do everything for the Dodgers in 2024, his presence in the lineup motivated and elevated the performance of other players. This was evident in Game 3 of the World Series following Ohtani’s shoulder injury in the previous game.
After leaving Game 2 of the World Series, uncertainty loomed in the Dodgers clubhouse as they prepared to travel to the Bronx. Despite concerns about his injury, Ohtani made it clear that he intended to play in the remaining games of the Fall Classic.
Manager Dave Roberts recalled, “He was determined to play. There was uncertainty among us, but he was committed from the start. We weren’t sure, but he was sure.”
Dodgers third baseman Max Muncy also emphasized the importance of having Ohtani in the lineup, stating, “Keeping the best player in the game on the field is always beneficial for the team. Having him there is a significant advantage. He’s delivered big moments for us, and we expect more from him.”
A few days later, the Dodgers clinched the World Series title in Ohtani’s inaugural season with the team. Reflecting on his remarkable year, Ohtani expressed, “This surpassed my expectations. Making the playoffs for the first time, winning the World Series – what more could I ask for?”
Ohtani achieved his primary goal in Major League Baseball by winning the World Series in his first postseason appearance. With nine more years ahead of him, he has the opportunity to build on his success.
