Simona Halep, former world No. 1, recently returned to tennis after a doping ban, only to suffer a knee injury in mid-May that is taking longer to heal than expected. In a recent update, the Romanian tennis star announced that she will be out of competition for an extended period.
After being away from the sport for over 18 months due to a ban, Halep made her comeback at the Miami Open in March. However, she suffered a loss in the first match to Paula Badosa. In her first match since the Miami Open defeat, Halep retired due to a knee injury while leading against McCartney Kessler at the Trophée Clarins tournament in Paris. Despite receiving wildcards for the Oeiras and Madrid tournaments, some players criticized her participation, but she had to withdraw from both events due to her fitness level and ongoing knee issues.
Halep has shared that her current knee injury is more challenging to manage than any she has experienced before, with persistent pain. Despite the emotional difficulty of being absent from the WTA Tour, especially after the doping case, she has chosen to prioritize her recovery:
I have decided to take the time needed to recover properly, rather than training and playing through pain. My instinct has always been to try to come back as soon as possible, but I am not a machine, I am a human being and I need time to recover from everything I have gone through.
