USA Gymnastics superstar Simone Biles continued to cement her Olympics legacy on Thursday by winning gold in the individual all-around final for the second time in her career.
Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade secured her second consecutive Olympic silver, while Biles’s teammate and Tokyo all-around gold medalist Suni Lee took home the bronze.
Lee made history by becoming the first Olympic all-around gold medalist to medal in the same event twice in a row since Romanian gymnastics icon Nadia Comaneci did so in 1980.
Biles’ Remarkable Comeback in Paris
After overcoming the twisties that once threatened her career three years ago, Biles marked her dominance in women’s gymnastics with another memorable Olympic triumph, solidifying her status as one of the greatest gymnasts of all time and a true comeback story for the ages.
Biles stands alone as the only US gymnast to win two Olympic individual all-around gold medals and the first woman gymnast to achieve gold in two non-consecutive Olympic Games (2016, 2024).
With a total of six gold medals, one silver, and two bronze, Biles now holds the title of the most decorated US gymnast of all time, with the chance to add more to her collection in the apparatus finals later this week.
USA Gymnastics faces tough competition from Andrade
Although Biles has not lost an all-around competition since 2013, her friendly rivalry with Andrade added excitement to the competition. Biles showcased her skills with a Yurchenko Double Pike vault, the only woman able to perform it, but a slip on uneven bars momentarily put her behind. However, she regained the lead with clean routines on balance beam and floor, ultimately winning by a narrow 1.199 margin.
“I don’t want to compete with Rebeca anymore. I’m tired,” joked Biles in the post-event press conference. “She’s way too close. I’ve never had an athlete that close, so it definitely put me on my toes and brought out the best athlete in myself.”
