CHICAGO — The standout quality of new Chicago Sky coach Tyler Marsh is his wealth of experience learning from top professionals in the industry.
Prior to his role in Chicago, Marsh was most recognized for his contributions as part of Becky Hammon’s coaching staff, which won two WNBA championships in Las Vegas. Before that, Marsh received valuable mentorship from esteemed NBA coaches Nick Nurse of the Philadelphia 76ers and Rick Carlisle of the Indiana Pacers.
During their recent visits to Chicago to face the Bulls, both Nurse and Carlisle expressed confidence in Marsh’s ability to lead the Sky as head coach.
“Tyler has more championship rings than anyone in this room, myself included,” Nurse joked, pointing out Marsh’s four titles — one in the D-League, one in the NBA, and two in the WNBA. “He’s almost got a handful of rings.”
Nurse initially hired Marsh straight out of college for a role with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers in the D-League. Marsh served as an all-access player development coach, dedicating himself to developing players around the clock.
After a successful stint with the Vipers, Marsh reunited with Nurse on the Toronto Raptors coaching staff, eventually earning another championship ring.
Carlisle also commended Marsh’s coaching abilities, noting his quiet yet commanding presence that garners respect from players.
In his new role with the Chicago Sky, Marsh aims to draw inspiration from his mentors while establishing his own coaching style.
Nurse recalled a daring move from Marsh during the 2019 NBA Finals, showcasing his fearlessness and willingness to take calculated risks.
Marsh is part of a growing trend of NBA assistant coaches transitioning to head coaching roles in the WNBA, a development welcomed by Nurse and Carlisle.
Despite the salary gap between the two leagues, both coaches believe that as revenue continues to increase in the WNBA, more top NBA assistants will be drawn to opportunities in the women’s league.
