Slitherine surprises at Steam RTS Fest with reveal of

Slitherine has been making big moves in the real-time strategy space recently – with both licensed and original games – and will continue to do so with some of the most promising upcoming RTS games in 2025. Now, we can add Platoon Commander to their roster of potential winners after a surprise reveal during the current Steam RTS Fest.

Platoon Commander, developed by Alpharabius Games, doesn’t have a release window yet but has been surprise-revealed alongside a demo that includes part of the first campaign mission. “Players step into the role of a German commander during the autumn of 1941” and are “tasked with capturing and holding a Soviet village.” The demo includes platoon customization across infantry, armor, and artillery. The full game focuses “on the German advance toward Moscow in the fall and winter of 1941,” so it’s definitely focusing on a specific phase and theatre of war in World War 2 instead of spreading itself too thin. It’s been teased the campaign will include 20 maps and feature turn-based strategy on the ‘campaign map’ level which then leads into the real-time tactical battles. More than “40 unit types across the Wehrmacht and the Red Army” have been included alongside a familiar squad-based system.

The game’s Steam page doesn’t confirm nor deny the inclusion of multiplayer modes or skirmish options, so we’ll assume the focus has been put on a handcrafted single-player experience for now. In any case, some interesting features are highlighted already:

A “psychological state of soldiers” system. Weather and time-of-day effects that can affect how battles play out. Destructible environments and buildings which can be used for extra defence. Two playable factions: Wehrmacht and Red Army. “Asymmetrical campaign” that paints two very different pictures of the conflict.

As it stands, Platoon Commander is set to release exclusively on Steam.
