Sophie Cunningham has shared a major update about her knee injury on social media. Cunningham is set to become an unrestricted free agent this offseason, making her future with the Indiana Fever uncertain. She had a tremendous impact on the Fever in her first season, serving as a fan favorite and Caitlin Clark’s enforcer.
In a post on her Instagram stories, Cunningham is back on the treadmill for the first time since undergoing surgery to repair a torn MCL in her right knee back in August. She also dropped a two-word message on her post, announcing her return to physical activities.
“She back,” Cunningham wrote.
Sophie Cunningham initially suffered the injury on Aug. 17 against the Connecticut Sun. Bria Hartley drove to the basket and fell on Cunningham’s knee, which prompted Indiana Fever fans to call out the Sun player for seemingly injuring the forward on purpose.
Even Cunningham’s mother went off on Hartley, but the Missouri product defended her former Phoenix Mercury teammate. She knew Hartley would not do that to her, and the picture of her smiling after the hit wasn’t intentional.
Nevertheless, Cunningham was diagnosed with a torn MCL and was ruled out for the season. She underwent surgery and was given a recovery timeline of around four months. Based on that timeline, it seems like the Fever star is ahead of schedule and could get cleared for contact soon.
Sophie Cunningham drops hints about her future with the Fever
The Indiana Fever were one win away from the WNBA Finals before falling short against the Las Vegas Aces in overtime of Game 5. The Fever were missing plenty of players during that playoff run, including Caitlin Clark and Sophie Cunningham.
However, the Fever could have a completely different roster next season due to the high number of unrestricted agents on their roster and in the WNBA this offseason. They only have Clark, Aliyah Boston and Makayla Timpson under contract, while Cunningham and the rest of the roster are free to join any team.
Speaking on her “Show Me Something” podcast, Cunningham revealed that she wants a multi-year contract in free agency. She didn’t name the Fever and was open about signing with a team willing to give her what she wants.
“I think the next team I play for, I want a bigger contract, so then I can buy a house and be homey and cozy,” Cunningham said.
Her co-host responded by mentioning a couple of teams, like the New York Liberty and Minnesota Lynx.
