South Africa’s strong performance at the Confederation of University and College Sports Association Region V Games paid off as the football, netball, basketball, and table tennis teams all won gold medals on Thursday, July 11, 2024 in Tshwane.
The women’s football team was exceptional in this edition of the event, leading them to be crowned champions after a dominant 3-0 victory over Botswana secured the gold medal with 20 goals scored in four games. They only conceded one goal, making them deserving winners.
Close behind them was the basketball team, who also had a flawless campaign without any losses. They finished the tournament with a 90-57 win over Zambia to claim the gold medal.
The netball team continued their outstanding run by winning the gold medal with a 96-30 victory over Zimbabwe on Thursday evening. Their consistency and hard work throughout the competition paid off, with a 78-41 win earlier in the day against Botswana in the semi-final.
The women’s table tennis team maintained their impressive performances to secure a gold medal, which seemed almost certain given their form.
Despite some ups and downs, the women’s volleyball team managed to clinch a commendable bronze medal with a 3-0 victory over Zambia. South Africa’s 3-0 win over Zambia was not unexpected given their previous successes against their African counterparts on Wednesday.
The athletics events began with great anticipation, and Savannah Combrink was the first woman to medal with a gold in Javelin.
South Africa excelled in the women’s 400m, with Angelique Strijdom taking gold, Nicola Gibbon winning silver, and Kennekae Batisani from Botswana securing the bronze.
The Chess team received silver, while Gabriella Claasen claimed the gold medal individually.
