COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) – South Carolina basketball legend A’ja Wilson shared another great moment with the fans as the sold-out arena honored her with a jersey in the rafters.
South Carolina retired Wilson’s #22 jersey before the women’s team took down Auburn in a high-energy Colonial Life Arena Sunday.
The four-time all-American, three-time SEC Player of the Year, and three-time WNBA MVP has made her impact across the nation and possibly a larger impact in the Midlands.
Wilson is a homegrown kid with accomplishments well before her time with the Las Vegas Aces. She led Heathwood Hall to a state championship in 2014. Three years later, she led South Carolina to its first national championship in program history.
Wilson was back in Columbia last week ahead of her special day. Saturday morning, she spent some time with the Gamecocks team; running through a workout and then dishing out some wisdom to more than a few attentive listeners.
“This is huge,” Wilson said Saturday. “It’s a big big moment and I’m super blessed to say that my jersey will be in the rafters, in my home. Not a lot of people can say that.”
WIS Sports Director Rick Henry had a first-row seat to recap the ceremony.
