Heading into their season-opening matchup at South Dakota State on Friday night in Brookings, Jim Flanery knew his team was in for a fierce test. The 21st-ranked Bluejays were underdogs against a Jackrabbits team that returned seven of their top eight scorers from last season, including Kallie Theisen. Despite the challenge, Creighton managed to keep the game close.
The game saw SDSU dominate in the second half, shooting 65.2% and outscoring the Bluejays in the paint. Creighton struggled from the 3-point range, only making 24 points on 25 attempts. Despite this, players like Lauren Jensen, Molly Mogensen, Kiani Lockett, and Morgan Maly stepped up for the team.
While the loss was disappointing, Jensen believes there are lessons to be learned from the game. The team will look to bounce back in their next matchup against Drake on Monday night at D.J. Sokol Arena.
This game showed the team’s potential and Flanery is confident they can overcome tough challenges in the future. The loss will provide valuable experience for the team as they navigate a difficult schedule ahead.
