UNCASVILLE, Conn. (AP) — Stephanie White and the Connecticut Sun have decided to part ways after she successfully led the team to the WNBA semifinals in both of her seasons as coach, as announced by the team on Monday.
The Sun had an impressive regular season finish, claiming third place with a 28-12 record. They swept Indiana in the first round of the playoffs but unfortunately lost in a five-game semifinal series against Minnesota.
“We want to express our gratitude to Stephanie for her contributions to the Connecticut organization over the past two seasons,” said Sun president Jen Rizzotti. “We wish her the best in her future endeavors.”
This coaching change marks the seventh in the WNBA, following the recent firing of Christie Sides from the Indiana Fever.
White, who had been dealing with a family emergency, shared during a previous media zoom call two weeks ago that she had not yet considered her coaching future.
In her debut season with the Sun, White led the team to a franchise-best 27-13 record and earned the titles of 2023 WNBA Coach of the Year and Associated Press Coach of the Year.
Prior to coaching the Sun, White had a successful coaching career with the Indiana Fever and Vanderbilt. Her basketball journey also included playing five seasons in the WNBA after her college career at Purdue, where she played her last four seasons with the Fever.
Besides coaching, White has also made appearances in television as a college basketball analyst for ESPN and the Big Ten Network.
