Seattle Storm guard Gabby Williams has emerged as a breakout star in women’s basketball this season.
After leading Team France to the gold medal match against Team USA at the Paris 2024 Olympics, Williams re-signed with the Seattle Storm for the remainder of the 2024 season.
Despite playing overseas earlier in the season, Williams decided to return to the WNBA, citing financial stability as a factor.
Williams has been vocal about the disparity in pay within the WNBA, stating that the current structure does not adequately support players and their families.
During her exit interview with the Storm, Williams reiterated her criticism of the WNBA’s pay system, emphasizing the need for fair compensation.
She pointed out that the highest-paid player in the league earns $252,450 annually, far below the $700,000 figure previously mentioned by league officials.
Williams emphasized the importance of adequate compensation for international players in the WNBA, highlighting the need for improved marketing agreements and higher salaries.
She concluded by stating that increased pay is essential for the WNBA to retain top talent and compete with overseas leagues.
Currently an unrestricted free agent, Williams faces a decision on whether to remain in the WNBA or seek a more lucrative opportunity overseas.
