There are numerous top-tier WNBA players poised to become free agents this offseason, which officially kicks off in February.
Frontcourt players stand out in this year’s group, with elite athletes like Breanna Stewart, Alyssa Thomas, Brittney Griner, and Nneka Ogwumike transitioning to unrestricted free agency status.
Ogwumike’s situation is particularly intriguing as she recently wrapped up a one-year contract with the Seattle Storm after spending her first 12 seasons in the WNBA with the Los Angeles Sparks. Despite the Storm’s improvement, they fell short of being true championship contenders.
Now a free agent once again, Ogwumike hinted at a possible desire to stay with the Storm during a recent podcast appearance.
When discussing her free agency plans, Ogwumike stated, “I am looking for a team that has a head coach that I am connected to, a practice facility, great engagement when it comes from ownership, management that’s on top of it.” She also noted that Seattle meets those criteria.
As the president of the Women’s National Basketball Players Association (WNBPA), Ogwumike emphasized the importance of quality of life and career sustainability in players’ free agency decisions.
While not explicitly stated, it appears that Ogwumike leans towards staying in Seattle, although her decision is not yet final.
