Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 will reportedly explore the series’ mythology with returning cast members hinting at an “intriguing” setting and characters including “old favorites” and “deep cuts”. If Birdo is not included, there will be outrage.
Scheduled for a 2026 release, Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 is building on the success of its predecessor by expanding the scope of the Mario world. Toad voice actor Keegan-Michael Key teased some exciting developments in an interview with Men’s Journal.
Key mentioned, “They’re going to find some really fantastic Easter eggs and it’s been very exciting so far.” The sequel promises to introduce new characters while also revisiting old favorites and lesser-known characters from the Mario universe.
The original movie was rich in Easter Eggs, and fans can expect the trend to continue in Super Mario Bros. Movie 2. Speculation is rife about which characters might make an appearance in the upcoming sequel.
Characters like Yoshi, Wario, Waluigi, Princess Daisy, Rosalina, and Bowser Jr. were absent from the first movie, sparking theories about their inclusion in the sequel. Perhaps even characters from the western release of Super Mario Bros. 2, like Wart, Phanto, or the elusive Birdo.
Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 is set to release on April 3, 2026, in the US. The star-studded cast includes Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, and Seth Rogan. And for those dreaming of cast additions, how about Matt Berry as Birdo?
