Super Shot or Super Not?
OPINION PIECE: We look at the benefits of adding this new rule to the Netball Superleague for 2025 and what benefits it can add to games.
The introduction of the “Super Shot” in Netball has stirred excitement and debate across leagues worldwide for several years. It is perhaps best known for its inclusion as part of the Suncorp National League in Australia it is set to be included for the first time as part of the UK’s Netball Superleague next season.
The rule modification allows players to score extra points from a long-range shot, making the game faster and more unpredictable. Its impact has been significant, with many key moments in recent seasons highlighting how this innovation has changed the way teams approach the game.
It is unknown at this stage how the change will affect things here ahead of the season but we can expect more dynamic games with teams adapting their strategies to incorporate this high-risk, high-reward shooting opportunity.
Unlike the standard shots from within the shooting circle, the “Super Shot” is taken from outside the 3-point line. This addition has shifted the focus of the game, providing more scoring opportunities and forcing teams to adapt quickly to different game dynamics.

Introducing the “Super Shot” into the new Netball Superleague here in the UK will raise questions as we move away from the “traditional” version of the game – however we will also be able to see some exciting moments in games which can only add to the experience.
