Fresh off her first grass-court final at the Bad Homburg Open, former world No. 1 Iga Swiatek rallied from a set down to defeat world No. 208 Caty McNally 5-7 6-2 6-1 in the Wimbledon second round.
Swiatek raced to a 4-1 lead to start the match on Center Court, but McNally fought back to level at 4-4. The eighth seed then saved three break points to hold serve, yet McNally responded by winning three consecutive games, sealing the opening set with a commanding love hold.
In a marathon second game of the second set, Swiatek finally converted her sixth break point to take a 2-0 lead after 19 minutes of play. She followed it up with a commanding love hold for 3-0, then continued her dominance, breaking McNally once more to close out the set 6-2.
Despite fighting hard throughout the third set, McNally got on the board only in the sixth game to avoid a bagel. After saving two break points in the seventh game, Swiatek earned her first match point with a line-clipping ace but couldn’t convert. McNally also failed to capitalize on a third break point. Eventually, a long forehand from McNally gave Swiatek a second match point, which she sealed with another ace.
