Tennis fans are abuzz with questions following Iga Swiatek’s unexpected withdrawal from this week’s Beijing tournament, where she was scheduled to defend her title and 1000 points. The world No. 1’s PR manager has provided some clarification, informing Polish media that although Swiatek will miss Beijing, she will not be skipping the entire Asian Swing and plans to return at the Wuhan Open.
Swiatek has had a demanding summer, with notable achievements including her fourth French Open victory in June and a bronze medal at the Paris Olympics. Her most recent appearance was at the US Open in early September, where she was eliminated by Jessica Pegula in the quarterfinals.
Exhaustion led her to withdraw from both the Canadian Open and the Korea Open. Beijing now marks the third tournament she has pulled out of in recent times due to undisclosed personal reasons.
Despite this, there is positive news from her PR manager, Paula Wolecka, who confirmed Swiatek’s intention to return at the Wuhan Open on October 7. Subsequently, she is expected to participate in the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo and wrap up her season at the WTA Finals in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. However, her team declined to provide specifics regarding the undisclosed personal issues when questioned by Polish journalists.
Furthermore, there is a possibility that Swiatek may join Team Poland for the Billie Jean King Cup Finals in Malaga. Poland’s captain, Dawid Celt, has already named Magdalena Frech, Magda Linette, Maja Chwalinska, and Katarzyna Kawa, with one spot remaining. Swiatek’s participation in Spain would greatly benefit the team, providing a significant opportunity for the Polish players in the competition.
Nevertheless, some fans remain doubtful. Given her recent unforeseen withdrawals, many are waiting to see if she will indeed compete in Wuhan. Despite lingering doubts with two weeks until the tournament, Wolecka’s update brings hope.
In other news, Swiatek has now spent 122 weeks as the top-ranked WTA player, surpassing Ashleigh Barty on the all-time list. She currently holds the seventh spot, trailing behind tennis icon Monica Seles, who held the No. 1 position for 178 weeks. (photo: Jimmie48)
