The Paris Olympics concluded recently, with the USWNT emerging as champions and securing their fifth gold medal on Saturday. Mallory Swanson of the USWNT scored the lone goal of the game in the 57th minute, leading the team to a 1-0 victory over Brazil.
Throughout the 2024 Olympics, the US remained in the lead and became the first women’s team in tournament history to achieve shutouts in all three knockout rounds.
Second-half adjustments secured USWNT win
In the first half, Brazil seemed to have the upper hand, pressuring the USWNT’s defense with direct play. Ludmila, who recently signed with the Chicago Red Stars, caused issues for the USWNT defense but was ruled offside in her attempt to score.
At halftime with a 0-0 scoreline, the US made adjustments and fought their way back into the game. A well-executed pass from Korbin Albert broke through Brazil’s defense and set up Swanson for the winning goal.
USA’s World Cup rebound streak kept alive
This victory signifies a remarkable comeback after a disappointing 2023 World Cup, showcasing the potential of new manager Emma Hayes with the team.
Historically, the USWNT has consistently claimed either the World Cup or Olympic gold following a loss in one competition, maintaining their streak of Olympic success after World Cup setbacks.
Under Hayes, the team has had an impressive start with a record of 9-0-1 in her first 10 games, demonstrating her impact on the team’s performance on the global stage.
Joy caffeinates USWNT’s frontline
The frontline trio of Swanson, Sophia Smith, and Trinity Rodman, known as the “Triple Espresso,” contributed significantly to the USWNT’s 12-goal Olympic tally, with each player scoring at least three goals and securing crucial wins in the knockout stages.
France’s Marie-Antoinette Katoto ended as the tournament’s top scorer with five goals, followed closely by Swanson with four goals.
“I think most importantly, you’re probably hearing it, we’re playing with joy,” Swanson shared with reporters post-match. “We’re having so much fun. I’m just so happy.”
Hayes, who took charge in May, echoed Swanson’s sentiments, expressing her excitement about the team’s potential. “I’m so excited about what we can do together. It’s been 75 days, baby!”
