The USWNT will aim to advance to their first gold medal match since 2012 today, facing off against Group B runner-up Germany in the first of two Olympic semifinals.
The US defeated Germany 4-1 in the second match of the tournament, igniting what would be the USWNT’s most successful Olympic group stage run since 2012.
Germany a familiar USWNT tournament foe
Today’s matchup will be the first time the US has faced a nation other than Canada in an Olympic semifinal since 2008, but Germany is a familiar opponent.
This is the fifth time the US has played Germany in a major tournament semifinal, the most between two nations in both Women’s World Cup and Olympic history. The US has emerged victorious in three out of the four encounters, with Germany winning once in the 2003 World Cup.
Both teams will come into the match fatigued after their quarterfinals went into extra time on Saturday. The US secured a win against Japan thanks to Trinity Rodman’s goal, while Germany advanced on penalty kicks after a draw with Canada.
USWNT Olympic semifinal roster takes shape
Fans may see some key players returning to the pitch today, as head coach Emma Hayes confirmed that all USWNT players trained on Monday despite some carrying injuries.
Forward Jaedyn Shaw, defender Tierna Davidson, and Emily Fox are managing injuries but are back in training. Additionally, midfielder Sam Coffey is available after serving a one-game suspension.
USWNT should draw on confidence
The USWNT should feel confident heading into the semifinal match, building on their successful Olympic run so far.
