Teoscar Hernández, outfielder for the Dodgers, has been named as the starting center fielder for the National League All-Star Team on Tuesday. This news came as a surprise since it was only revealed when the lineups were announced on Monday.
Hernández is stepping in for Fernando Tatis Jr., the injured San Diego Padres star who is not expected to return from the injured list anytime soon.
Although Shohei Ohtani was voted as an All-Star starter by fans, Freddie Freeman, Will Smith, and Mookie Betts were selected as reserves. Unfortunately, Betts and Dodgers pitcher Tyler Glasnow, who was also chosen for the NL staff, won’t be able to play due to injuries.
Having signed a one-year, $23.5 million contract with the Dodgers before the season, Hernández has been proving to be a valuable investment with a .261 batting average, 19 home runs, and 62 RBIs. His excellent defense in right field has allowed Betts to smoothly transition to the infield.
Hernández previously became an All-Star in 2021 while playing for the Toronto Blue Jays. In that game at Coors Field, he started and went 1 for 2 with a double against Trevor Rogers.
Hernández will also be participating in the Home Run Derby on Monday before the All-Star Game on Tuesday, which will be televised by Fox with the first pitch scheduled for 5 p.m. PT at Globe Life Field.
