Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 probably isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, especially with the next game still deep in development and Massive Studios facing layoffs and high-key staff departures. Quietly but steadily, the second game in the franchise has retained a loyal following over the years and expanded its horizons with new paid content and substantial free updates. And the content rollout isn’t over yet, it seems: Ubisoft and Massive are ready to celebrate the series’ 10th anniversary with a Realism Mode.

Revealed as part of an ‘Anniversary Season’ video (which you can watch below) released on 3rd March, this alternative mode is turning the looter shooter into a more streamlined and far more punishing experience which swaps bullet sponge enemies for fragile humans which better fit The Division’s grounded setting. Mind you, the entire game series is heavy in RPG systems, but many casual players always felt a more lethal version of its gunfights would’ve been interesting to have outside its survival and BR-oriented efforts. Well, wonder no more: that’s exactly what this mode is offering.

But there’s a catch. As explained by the developers in the video shared above, the limited-time Realism Mode will only be around during the four-week Anniversary Season, which started yesterday and lasts until 1st April. During that time, the (excellent) Warlords of New York expansion will be available to everyone at no extra cost. Since the Realism Mode is limited to that DLC, this seems like an especially sensible move. Of course, extra rewards and events will happen throughout the season.

As always, there’s the chance of Realism Mode becoming a permanent addition that players can opt into when creating new agents if there’s a positive enough response to it during the following weeks. It wouldn’t be the first time a limited-time mode or piece of content becomes a key part of the game following glowing player feedback (and, you never know, it could also be a masked way to test ideas potentially making their way into The Division 3).

Realism Mode also lines up with Massive’s ambitious plans for The Division 2: Survivors, a big new extraction experience that honestly sounds like a perfect fit for the franchise’s harsh post-pandemic United States setting.
