Two generations, the same obsession with speed: this is how Charles Leclerc draws closer to Ferrari’s most successful driver and Formula 1 legend, Michael Schumacher.
There is a number in Ferrari’s long history that connects two seemingly distant eras: that of Michael Schumacher and that of Charles Leclerc. Two very different drivers, two distinct periods of Formula 1, yet a red thread ties them together through statistics: combined, they are responsible for just over one-third of the 254 pole positions achieved by the Maranello team.
Michael Schumacher, between 1996 and 2006, claimed 58 pole positions, symbolizing the absolute dominance of an era that is unlikely to be repeated. Charles Leclerc, who arrived at Ferrari in 2019, has 27 poles, a testament to pure talent and an almost instinctive ability to extract the maximum even from cars not always capable of fighting for championships. Together, their numbers add up to 85 pole positions, roughly 33.5% of Ferrari’s entire history.
To appreciate the scale, one only needs to look at other notable names of the modern era. Sebastian Vettel, in five seasons with Ferrari, managed 12 poles; Fernando Alonso achieved 4 between 2010 and 2014; Carlos Sainz has 5, while Lewis Hamilton is still at zero. All exceptional drivers for the Scuderia, yet far from the figures that only Michael Schumacher and Charles Leclerc have reached. The only other driver approaching these numbers is Niki Lauda, with 23 poles.
Two generations, two approaches to speed
The German dominated with the surgical precision of the F2002 and F2004, leveraging unmatched technical and mental superiority. Leclerc, on the other hand, shines in the chaos of the modern era, extracting impossible tenths even when the car is not up to championship standard, as demonstrated by his unexpected pole in Hungary.
Across two different eras, Schumacher and Leclerc have made qualifying a hallmark of their careers. The numbers show that when it comes to Ferrari pole positions, their names remain at the very top, connecting two generations of drivers through sheer speed, skill, and determination.
