The Fatal Flaw Behind the Mayweather vs Tyson Plan

There’s one clear flaw in the Mayweather vs Tyson plan, and it becomes harder to ignore as the proposed fight date draws closer.

That problem became even more noticeable earlier this month when Tyson appeared on the Ariel Helwani podcast wearing a cast on his arm — an image that immediately raised fresh doubts about a fight supposedly just weeks away.

Floyd Mayweather has mentioned the idea of facing Mike Tyson twice. One of those posts was later deleted, and the other came almost exactly six months ago.

Since then, Mayweather has not mentioned Tyson on social media once, and his team has never formally confirmed the event.

In essence, Mayweather has never treated it like one of his usual fights.

As World Boxing News reported when the matchup was first being discussed, the Tyson exhibition was talked about publicly without ever taking on the full shape of a proper Mayweather event.

Now, with the proposed date less than a month away and still no official promotion, the silence itself has become part of the story.

The Fatal Flaw

Mayweather vs Tyson has never gathered the aura of an actual Floyd Mayweather event.

When Mayweather wants a fight, he usually sells it himself. He puts the idea out there, watches the reaction, and leans into it if the interest is big enough.

That is what happened with Conor McGregor.

Mayweather floated the notion of boxing vs UFC and almost broke the internet with it. He was proved right to follow that road, as the event became one of the most lucrative fights in boxing history, second only to his showdown with Manny Pacquiao.

With Tyson, the reaction never took hold.

The idea went out and the reaction came and went, before the trail suddenly went cold.

That is the flaw in the whole plan. A fight supposedly this close should not feel this distant.

The Silence Since

One of the clearest clues is Mayweather himself.

He only mentioned Tyson twice in 2025 before the subject disappeared altogether.

In the meantime, Mayweather has had no issue publicly attaching himself to other events. As WBN noted when Mayweather confirmed an exhibition in Athens while the Tyson bout remained unaddressed, he is more than capable of making noise when he wants a date on the map.

There are only a few realistic explanations. Mayweather may have looked at the reaction and decided it was not worth the effort in the exhibition era. He may have had second thoughts with a September rematch against Pacquiao already secured. Alternatively, roadblocks may have emerged while trying to put the Tyson fight together.

Tyson appearing with a cast only deepened the doubts around a fight that already seemed uncertain.

Whatever the reason, a bout of this size should be building by now.

Instead, it still feels more like an idea that was tested than a Mayweather event that is actually on the way.

For a fighter who built his career on controlling attention and turning it into money, that silence may be the biggest clue about the Tyson plan of all.
