The four best WNBA free agents still available

Since WNBA free agency started earlier this year, a lot of players have already been on the move. Apart from the three blockbuster trades that moved Alyssa Thomas, Satou Sabally, Kelsey Plum, and Jewell Loyd, several stars also signed with new teams in free agency.

Brittney Griner and Brionna Jones decided to join the Atlanta Dream, DeWanna Bonner signed with the Indiana Fever, Courtney Vandersloot returned to the Chicago Sky, and Tiffany Hayes joined the Golden State Valkyries.

While most of the top free agents have already made their decisions, there are still some interesting names available, and plenty of teams are still looking to fill out their rosters.

4. Chennedy Carter

Chennedy Carter’s exit from the Chicago Sky was not necessarily graceful. Despite being the team’s leading scorer in the 2024 season, she did not get a new contract from the Sky as a restricted free agent and is now an unrestricted free agent. Annie Costabile reported that some locker room issues may have played into the decision.

That has evidently hurt Carter’s contract value, as she still remains a free agent. But it does not change the fact that she is one of the best scorers still available. Carter averaged 17.5 points last season and has also had some big performances in China. Any team looking for a scoring boost, should consider giving Chennedy Carter a chance.

3. Emma Meesseman

Emma Meesseman has not played in the WNBA since the 2022 season but has been playing extremely well in Europe. This season, she is playing for Fenerbahce, averaging 17.9 points on very efficient shooting, 6.2 rebounds, five assists, and two steals in EuroLeague Women. In 2023 and 2024, she was named the EuroLeague MVP.

If Meesseman decides to return to the WNBA in 2025, she could be a real difference-maker for whichever team can land her, especially if it is a contending team. Adding Meesseman could be what sets one of the top teams in the league apart from the others.

2. Diana Taurasi

The Phoenix Mercury already look much different than they did last season. Brittney Griner left in free agency, and Sophie Cunningham and Natasha Cloud were moved in the deals that brought Alyssa Thomas and Satou Sabally to town. The Mercury also brought in Latvian forward Kitja Laksa to boost the team’s 3-point shooting.

Diana Taurasi is still a free agent, as everyone awaits her decision on whether she will retire or not. Even at 42, Taurasi is still one of the better players in the league, but the more time passes, the less likely it seems that she will play in the 2025 season. Plus, Griner leaving Phoenix hints at Taurasi’s retirement. If Taurasi wanted to play another season, it would surely be in Phoenix and it seems unlikely that Griner would want to miss Taurasi’s final season in the WNBA.

1. Elena Delle Donne

Much like in Taurasi’s and Meesseman’s cases, Elena Delle Donne’s plans are still uncertain. She has not played since 2023, sitting out the 2024 season, and is now a free agent. Her talent is not in question. The two-time MVP could still help teams win.

The question is just whether she wants to return to the WNBA and, if so, which team would interest her. The Washington Mystics—the team she played for in her last six seasons—are currently rebuilding and not necessarily a free-agency destination. However, if they could add Delle Donne to their core of young players, most notably Aaliyah Edwards and Shakira Austin, the Mystics could quickly change their fortunes—if everyone is healthy and available.
