The long-standing records Marquez and Bagnaia can break in MotoGP 2025

Pre-season testing at Sepang and Buriram has strengthened early predictions about 2025 being a walkover for Ducati in MotoGP.

Most analysts and experts point to the championship being a head-to-head battle between Marc Marquez and Francesco Bagnaia, who are teaming up at the works Ducati squad this year. Together, Marquez and Bagnaia boast an impressive 11 titles – including eight in the premier class – and a total of 91 victories, split between 62 for the Spaniard and 29 for the Italian.

Ducati’s ‘dream team’ is contesting the longest season in the history of the world championship, with 22 races, making it possible for them to break the 13-victory record set by Marquez at Honda in 2014. In fact, last year, Bagnaia managed to win 11 out of 20 races despite not winning the championship.

Another record that could fall this year is the one for the most victories by a single team, which is held by Honda since 2014. During that season, HRC won 14 races, with Dani Pedrosa’s triumph at the Czech GP adding to the 13 victories achieved by Marquez. Honda had broken its own record of 13 victories from 2011, when Casey Stoner won 10 races and Pedrosa scored another three.

In 2024, Bagnaia and Enea Bastianini, riding for Ducati, matched that total of 13 victories. Therefore, ending the 2025 season with fewer than 14 victories would be a step backward for Ducati.

Fewest race winners in a single season

The 2025 season may see the fewest number of race winners in MotoGP’s history. In the MotoGP era, the record for the least number of grand prix victors in a single season was set in 2012, when only three riders managed to win any of the 18 events – Pedrosa with seven, Stoner with five and champion Jorge Lorenzo with six.

On nine occasions, only four riders have won races in a single season, most recently in 2015, with victories from Lorenzo (seven), Marquez (five), Valentino Rossi (four), and Pedrosa (two).

Five riders managed to win a race in seven seasons in the championship’s MotoGP era. This was also the case in 2024, when Bagnaia won 11 races, Pramac’s Jorge Martin took the crown with three victories, Marquez won another three races, Bastianini secured two wins, and Maverick Vinales managed one victory for Aprilia. In total, Ducati won 19 of the 20 grands prix.

There was a similar situation in 2003 when Honda won 15 out of the 16 grands prix held that year. The only time the Japanese manufacturer missed out on a victory that season was in Barcelona, when Loris Capirossi took the top spot for Ducati.

Without a doubt, the biggest challenge for the Italian manufacturer this season will be to finish the year with a perfect record of victories.
