As I start writing this, I am unsure if this is a farewell to boxing or a call to action.
Covering boxing has become a tiresome task, especially outside of the actual fights.
In my eighteen years of writing about the sport, eleven of which have been full-time, sacrifices have been made. My family has also made sacrifices as I have chosen to prioritize writing over other opportunities. Family is important in ensuring a purpose-driven life, and success without meaning is futile. The recent involvement of boxing with Saudi Arabia has revealed the darker side of the sport. Embracing a ruthless monarchy raises serious concerns about the ethical standards of the industry.
The media’s compliance with Saudi Arabia is particularly troubling, especially considering the regime’s track record of human rights abuses. The purchase of Ring Magazine by Saudi interests is a clear example of compromising journalistic integrity.
Taking money from oppressive regimes contradicts any moral stance one might take, as the evils committed are overlooked for financial gain. It is disappointing to see individuals who once advocated for ethics now supporting Saudi initiatives without regard for the consequences.
The Saudi influence in boxing poses a threat to the sport’s integrity and independence. Ignoring the atrocities committed by the regime in pursuit of profit undermines the values of boxing. The lack of ethical standards in this situation is disheartening.
The direction in which boxing is heading, under Saudi influence, raises concerns about the future of the sport. The consolidation of power in the hands of a murderous monarchy poses significant risks for boxing’s autonomy and credibility. The media’s role in promoting Saudi interests further complicates the situation.
The current state of affairs in boxing is troubling, resembling a sinking ship with no clear solution in sight. The impact of Saudi involvement on the sport’s integrity is alarming, calling into question the ethics of those involved. The lack of transparency and accountability in a monopoly controlled by a repressive regime is cause for concern.
As I reflect on these developments, I am uncertain about my continued involvement in boxing. The challenges posed by Saudi influence necessitate careful consideration of the moral implications of participating in the sport.
The future of boxing under Saudi guidance raises significant ethical concerns that cannot be ignored. Maintaining integrity and independence in the face of oppressive regimes is crucial for preserving the sport’s values.
