Selin Cemal Başděükçü is one of the few up-and-coming players who best exemplify the shift in women’s football, which is increasingly defined by youth, technical intelligence, and adaptability.
The Turkish-Cypriot defender has established herself as one of the most promising young players in West Ham’s squad and a rising star in Turkey’s international career.
Early development and life
Growing up in England, Cemal advanced through the fiercely competitive youth programs at Chelsea and Arsenal thanks to her early love of football. She was able to develop a strong positional awareness, a commanding defensive presence, and a maturity on the ball that belied her age during those early years in elite academies.
With a height of approximately 1.71 meters, a right foot, and a natural ability to remain composed under duress, she became a modern defender who could play both as a defensive midfielder and centre back.
Joining West Ham: A new pathway for Selin Cemal
When West Ham announced in July 2025 that Cemal would be joining their Professional Game Academy (PGA) for the 2025/26 season, it was her biggest step to date. The PGA, which was created to close the gap between youth development and first team football, has emerged as a crucial path for gifted young people looking to gain exposure at the senior level.
Cemal’s composure, physical self-assurance, and readiness to demand the ball under duress quickly won over the coaching staff. Her integration has been greatly aided by senior players. Especially those in the defensive unit, who gave her advice as she adapted to the demanding nature of a WSL setting.
Her influence was felt right away. Cemal made her senior debut on September 24th in a 5-1 Women’s League Cup triumph over Charlton Athletic. A few weeks later, she played centrally in defence and demonstrated the positional maturity that has come to define her game. She assisted West Ham to a 5-0 clean sheet victory in the same competition.
The pivotal moment came in November 2025 when Cemal made her Women’s Super League debut against Everton. This is a noteworthy accomplishment for any adolescent joining one of the top leagues in the world.
Cemal marked her new year by signing her first professional contract with West Ham. She penned a deal until June 2028 on January 6th. Manager Rita Guarino is ‘delighted’ with the teenager’s progress so far at the club.

International recognition
Cemal’s growth on the international scene has been reflected in her advancement at the club level. She has committed to representing Turkey at the U19 level, despite being eligible for Cyprus as well. She has started to establish herself in the international squad, mostly as a defender, with at least five youth caps under her belt.
Cemal is a long-term project for the Turkish federation because of her poise, game management, and ball distribution, and she has a realistic chance of joining the senior national team in the coming years.
Playing style and strengths
Cemal’s ability to read the game and her poise when in possession are what define her. She plays with maturity beyond her years, whether she is marshalling the back line from the centre or stepping into midfield to break lines. Her ability to make composed decisions under duress, positional intelligence and spatial awareness, versatility between defence and midfield, and confidence in possession — especially in confined spaces — have all been commended by coaches.
She is one of the most promising prospects in West Ham’s development pathway because of these qualities.
