The Las Vegas Aces failed to secure a three-peat this season, bowing out to the New York Liberty in the semifinals. Head coach Becky Hammon’s remarks hint at potential roster changes as they aim to rebuild towards championship contention.
Hammon stated to the Associated Press, “So we’re going to have to get together and figure it out, but obviously we have to get better… It’s not going to be the same group probably next year.”
Some players’ contracts are expiring, and potential moves in the expansion draft to Golden State could see key members of the Aces’ core departing.
Notably, Kelsey Plum, Alysha Clark, Tiffany Hayes, Sydney Colson, and Queen Egbo have contracts expiring this year, per SportTrac.
Hayes and Egbo are at risk of not getting extensions, with Hayes potentially considering re-retirement and Egbo seeking more playing time elsewhere.
Plum and Colson are likely to remain with the team, forming a core group, while uncertainties loom over Clark’s future due to her age at 36.
The Golden State Valkyries’ expansion draft on Dec. 6 poses additional challenges, with potential roster changes for the Aces and top prospects like Kate “Money” Martin and Kierstan Bell.
Protecting only six players, the Aces face tough decisions, likely safeguarding their starting lineup and key bench player, but Clark’s situation remains uncertain.
Recent draftee Kierstan Bell’s restricted playing time could push her towards Golden State for more opportunities and a potential starting role.
Despite falling short of the finals, the Aces remain a strong contender with work ahead in contract negotiations and team building under Hammon’s leadership.
