Charles Leclerc’s run in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix at the Baku City Circuit took a unexpected turn when he was overtaken by Oscar Piastri. Leclerc admitted to a judgment error by almost leaving room for Piastri, who then pulled away in his fast MCL38. While chasing the Woking car, Leclerc noticed some details, including a special engine mapping.
“McLaren had a mode that boosted power on the last straight, making overtaking harder,” Leclerc told Sky Sport after the race.
There was also a surprise with the Pirelli tires. Leclerc noted a significant gap after the pit stop and struggled with the pace on the hard tires, which they hadn’t tested with a heavy fuel load. Despite having support in slow sections with medium tires, the hard tires didn’t offer the same advantage.” – Charles Leclerc concluded his reflections on the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
