This Day in Track & Field-July 16

1894–An international collegiate meet between Yale and Oxford had 10,000 spectators at the Queen’s Grounds in London.

1900—At the Paris Olympics, Alfred Tysoe from Great Britain won the 800m, while Al Kraenzlein dominated the 200m hurdles and John Rimmer led a British sweep in the 4000m-Steeplechase.

200-meter hurdles—Al Kraenzlein still won easily in 25.4 despite a false start!

4000m-Steeplechase—John Rimmer won in a close finish, holding off his British teammates to secure the gold.

Triple Jump—Ray Ewry won all three standing jump events and set a World Best in the High Jump.

Hammer Throw—John Flanagan led a U.S. sweep in the event.

1915—Norm Taber set a World Record for the Mile at Harvard.

1932—Jack Keller tied the World Record in the 110m hurdles, while Bill Miller and Bill Graber set records in the Pole Vault.

Standing High Jump/Long Jump/Triple jump—Ray Ewry won all events, while Meyer Prinstein won the Triple Jump.

1960—Several American Records were set at the U.S. Women’s Olympic Trials in Abilene, Texas, including by Wilma Rudolph, Willye White, and Earlene Brown.
