Imane Khelif faced online abuse by malicious actors earlier this week. The Algerian Olympic boxer has been a prominent figure during these Olympics, with the focus on her gender. Chael Sonnen, a former UFC fighter, has stepped up to combat the false information that has been circulating.
Imane Khelif
Many online individuals were led to believe that Imane Khelif was a transgender athlete or a man posing as a woman. This sparked outrage among the public. The reality is that Imane Khelif hails from Algeria where being transgender is illegal, and gender transition surgeries are prohibited. The Algerian Olympic boxer was born female and continues to identify as a woman. Furthermore, she has not shown elevated testosterone levels and has undergone Olympic testing for a minimum of four years.
Last year, Imane Khelif was suspended by the IBA, an organization that lacks recognition from the Olympics. The IOC has criticized the IBA for corruption and failure to adhere to proper protocols. In a statement, the IOC stated, “The current backlash against these two athletes stems entirely from this arbitrary decision, made without following due process – especially considering these athletes had been competing at the highest level for many years.”
“‘Are these athletes women?’ The answer is yes, based on eligibility, their passports, and their history,” IOC director Mark Adams added.
Chael Sonnen Talks Imane Khelif
Those who jumped to conclusions and passed judgment without full information are now retracting their statements and offering apologies. Chael Sonnen, a former UFC title contender and MMA personality, has stepped forward to counter the spread of misinformation.
One Tweet falsely claimed that two men were competing for Olympic boxing medals. Sonnen responded simply: “This is incorrect.”
