DiJonai Carrington scored 19 points, leading the Connecticut Sun to a 69-61 victory over the Los Angeles Sparks, highlighted by a decisive 14-0 run in the final minutes of the game. The historic matchup, the first WNBA game ever played at the TD Garden in Boston, drew a franchise-record sellout crowd of 19,125 fans.
The Sun rallied from a 59-55 deficit with less than four minutes remaining, energizing the packed arena and underscoring the significance of the event. The atmosphere in the Garden was electric, with fans fully aware of the historical moment and the gratitude from the players was palpable.
“It felt great, it felt like what every night should feel like,” said Carrington. “Women’s basketball is trending in this direction, and I think it gave us another level of energy today,” Alyssa Thomas said.
The evening began with a block party on Canal Street, part of the Sun’s four-day celebration aimed at engaging young fans. Sarah Blythe of Weymouth, who attended with her daughter Tatum, noted the growing excitement for the sport. “Tatum started playing basketball this past year, and she’s really excited about the whole league,” Blythe said.
