The Tigers are planning to select left-hander Brant Hurter to pitch in tomorrow’s game against the Royals, according to AJ Hinch. Hurter, who is not yet on the 40-man roster, was a seventh-round pick by the Tigers in the 2021 draft out of Georgia Tech. He reached the Double-A level in 2022 and had a strong 2023 season before struggling in Triple-A this year.
Despite his Triple-A struggles, Hurter will make his MLB debut tomorrow as a bulk arm following an opener. The Tigers have a rotation mix featuring only four pitchers, so a good performance from Hurter tomorrow could earn him a more extended look in the majors.
The club’s rotation depth has been depleted in recent weeks due to trades and injuries, making Hurter’s opportunity even more valuable. The team had considered right-hander Beau Brieske for a rotation role, but he remains in a relief role for now.
