Tom Aspinall shares update as eye injury medical records get released

Tom Aspinall has been in the firing line since he was forced to withdraw from his UFC 321 title fight. Aspinall saw his stock among fans take a huge hit, and while many questioned if the incident was serious enough to force him out of the bout, his new update proves his innocence.

The Brit headed into his first fight as the undisputed UFC champion as a heavy favorite, facing the always-dangerous Ciryl Gane on October 25. Less than a full round into the fight, the champion suffered a double eye poke that rendered him unable to continue, and in turn, ended the clash in a no-contest.

Despite replays clearly showing contact with his eye, Tom Aspinall was booed by fans in attendance at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, UAE. That disapproval transcended the stadium, with fans online also questioning Aspinall’s decision to take the easy way out.

Now, in a post on social media, Tom Aspinall has shared proof of the damage he received to his eye on that fateful night one month ago.

“Thanks for all the love, support, and memes,” Aspinall wrote on Instagram as he updated fans on his eye injury. “F*** the hate.”

Aspinall was mocked by fans and fellow fighters, with the majority believing he could have continued.

Hoping to put the disappointment behind him, Aspinall has promised to avenge the events that unfolded at UFC 321 next time out.

“Coming to get my revenge on the big cheater.”

After sharing several humorous pictures, Tom Aspinall provided proof of the damage he sustained with a medical update from the NHS, the United Kingdom’s publicly funded healthcare system.

“Mr. Aspinall sustained significant bilateral ocular trauma during a professional sporting event in late October 2025,” the medical update read. “Immediate visual disturbance resulted in the fight being stopped.”

A list of confirmed clinical findings followed:

Advanced imaging (CT and MRI) confirmed orbital soft-tissue trauma. Orthoptic evaluations demonstrated impaired binocular coordination and restricted ocular motility.Bilateral traumatic Brown’s syndrome, indicating disruption of the superior oblique tendon-trochlear mechanism.Persistent diplopia (double vision), especially in positions of upgaze and lateral gaze.Reduced best-corrected visual acuity post-trauma.Marked peripheral visual field impairment confirmed by automated perimetry.CT scan suggesting a minimally displaced fracture of the right medial orbital wall.

Though the outcome of the headlining bout at UFC 321 angered most, it seems Tom Aspinall’s reaction was justified.

Very few sided with Aspinall during his public lashing, but the medical records may change some fans’ views on the situation.

“Mr. Aspinall must abstain from sparring, fighting, or participating in any combat-related activity until full resolution of eye movement impairment and diplopia,” the medical record continued to state.

Between various dates from late October and November 21, Aspinall had been regularly attending checkups and health examinations regarding the state of his eye.

This has resulted in the UFC ace being advised not to partake in any physical activity until the issue is resolved.

The National Health Service later provided a health summary for Tom Aspinall.

“This constitutes clinically significant bilateral ocular trauma requiring ongoing consultant-led management. Mr. Aspinall is not yet medically cleared for combat activity.”

“Future management: Depending on clinical progression, targeted periocular steroid injections or surgical intervention to address persistent motility impairment may be required if symptoms fail to resolve.”

“Overall, the clinical picture remains consistent with significant traumatic bilateral Brown’s syndrome, associated with ongoing dilopia, restricted ocular motility, reduced visual function and substantial field loss.”

“Symptoms remained unresolved as of late November 2025, and ongoing specialist follow-up is required and ongoing.”
