TORONTO — Toronto’s new WNBA team is seeking input from fans.
The expansion team is asking fans from across Canada to share ideas, hopes, and suggestions for the team’s name, colors, and identity.
Team president Teresa Resch explained, “We want people to really share with us what this team means to them, what inspired them, and any sort of inspiration that moves them.”
Fans can provide their input via www.NameYourTeam.ca or by texting WNBA to 1-833-662-3664 until Aug. 28.
A group of designers and advisers will review the contributions to develop a shortlist of options, subject to a legal review. The final name will be chosen by team and league leadership by the end of the year.
Resch emphasized the importance of creating a name, logo, and identity that resonates with the fans and instills pride.
The team will share its progress throughout the process via its website, social media, and podcasts.
Toronto was awarded a WNBA team in May, marking the league’s first team outside the U.S. The team will be owned and operated by Kilmer Sports Ventures, with plans to start playing in the 2026 season.
Kilmer Sports Ventures, led by Larry Tanenbaum, reportedly paid US$115 million for the WNBA team. Tanenbaum was also instrumental in bringing the NBA to Toronto 30 years ago.
The WNBA team will primarily play at the 8,700-seat Coca-Cola Coliseum, with Scotiabank Arena also an option. Home games may also be played elsewhere in Canada to promote women’s basketball.
Resch, who previously worked with the Raptors, emphasized that the WNBA team will have its own unique story and identity.
