Tadej Pogačar of UAE Emirates completed a historic season by winning the 2024 Tour de France with a series of stage victories, including the final time trial in Nice. Pogačar’s exceptional performance solidified his legacy, surpassing his rivals and claiming his third Tour de France victory at the age of 25. He also achieved the rare Giro-Tour Double, a feat not seen since Marco Pantani in 1998.
The time trial in Nice, which featured the famous Col d’Èze climb from Paris-Nice, replaced the traditional finish on the Champs Élysées due to the upcoming Olympics. This route maintained the prestigious Paris connection and provided a stunning backdrop for the event, connecting Monaco and Nice, two renowned sports locations. While Remco Evenepoel, the ITT World Champion, set impressive times, he was ultimately surpassed by Vingegaard and Pogačar. Pogačar secured his third consecutive stage win and his fifth in the last week, marking his sixth overall victory in the Tour.
Evenepoel defended his best young rider title with a third-place finish overall behind Vingegaard, showcasing a promising start to his Tour de France career. However, his defeat in the time trial hints at challenges ahead as long as Pogačar and Vingegaard remain in top form. Richard Carapaz of EF Education claimed the KOM jersey, while Biniam Girmay won the points competition.
