Toyota and Ferrari battle at the top amid multiple interruptions

Many long interruptions in the afternoon session of the 24 Hours of Le Mans Test Day, Toyota finishes ahead of Ferrari and Alpine: the results

The second and final session of the Test Day for the 24 Hours of Le Mans saw Toyota take the top position, with the best performance of the day, but the group was not without incidents and failures, with as many as three red flags: here are the afternoon results.

Complicated start for Algarve Pro Racing and Inter EuropolThe Aston Martin #009 did not have an easy session, after a long gravel excursion by Sorensen at Indianapolis. In the end, they managed to complete 19 laps.

The Peugeot #94 instead completed 31 laps after a technical problem at the end of the first hour and returned to the pits very slowly. Midway through the session, the BMW #20 of Sheldon Van Der Linde went into the gravel at Porsche Curve, causing the first red flag of the session. According to BMW, the car seemed to have a technical failure and did not restart afterwards. Adding action to the tests was the United #22, leader of the LMP2 class, with Heinemaier Hansson spinning at Tertre Rouge. Also, Toyota #8 of Buemi made a mistake going long at Mulsanne.

With 36 minutes left, the Proton #11 of Giorgio Roda spun at Indianapolis, causing the second red flag, which lasted a full 20 minutes.

At the restart, however, after less than 7 minutes, there was a final incident with the Mercedes #63 of Brenton Grove crashing at the Corvette, the fourth and last of the Porsche Curves. With this red flag, the tests ended early, leaving the next appointment at 14:00 on Wednesday for the first free practice sessions.

Hartley closes Test Day in the leadThe top position at tests rarely brings luck, but Brendon Hartley definitely hopes to keep it next week: he set a 3:26.246 that placed the Toyota #8 in first, half a second ahead of the Ferrari #51 of James Calado and the Alpine #36 of Mick Schumacher, with the latter time coming much later on a cooler track.

Completing the top 10 were the Porsche #6 Penske, Ferrari #83 AF Corse, Porsche #4 Penske, Ferrari #50, BMW #20 (fourth at the time of failure), Cadillac #12, and Alpine #35, all packed within just 0.4 seconds.

Further behind were Porsche #5 Penske, BMW #15, Cadillac #311, Toyota #7, Porsche #99 Proton (with the highest top speed, 344.5 km/h), Cadillac #101 WTR, and #38 JOTA, while the two Aston Martins and two Peugeots took the last spots one after the other.

United leads in LMP2 24 Hours of Le Mans Test Day results ToyotaPietro Fittipaldi set the best time in LMP2 with 3:35.770 for United Autosports #22, placing four tenths ahead of TDS Racing #29, the Pro/AM leader with Mathis Beche. Then came #199 AO Racing, #43 Inter Europol, and #183 AF Corse completing the top 5.

Lexus-Ferrari still ahead in LMGT3The LMGT3 standings did not change in the second session: again, the Lexus #87 led ahead of the Ferrari #21, although this time Josè Maria Lopez set a great lap (3:55.276), putting him more than 1.5 seconds ahead of Alessio Rovera. Next was Ferrari #57 Kessel of Stevenson, just a tenth behind Rovera, and Lexus #78 Hawksworth, over 2 seconds behind its sister car.

Last year, the best race lap was 3:55.263, while the best test performance did not exceed 3 minutes and 59 seconds.

Closing the Top 5 was Ferrari #54 Vista AF Corse of Davide Rigon, 2.4 seconds from the leader.
