Trent Williams, the All-Pro left tackle, has ended his contract holdout and reported to the San Francisco 49ers to finalize a new deal.
Williams had been back home in Texas during training camp while seeking a new deal, incurring over $5m in fines for missing camp and pre-season games.
But now, Williams is set to receive a new contract, with the 49ers resolving their major contract disputes before the season opener. They also signed receiver Brandon Aiyuk to a four-year, $120m extension last week.
This means that the Niners will have almost all key players from last season’s standout offense back for the 2024 season. Only a few players who played significant snaps on offense last season will be missing.
Getting Williams back is seen as a crucial move for the team. He is considered the most irreplaceable piece on the star-studded roster.
Williams, at 36 years old, was owed $20m this season under his previous deal but will now sign a new contract to replace the final three years of his current deal.
Despite being one of the highest-paid offensive linemen when he signed his previous deal, Williams’ average annual value has been surpassed by others this offseason.
Williams is widely regarded as the top offensive lineman in the game, having been named All-Pro left tackle for the past three seasons.
The Niners will kick off their season against the Jets in San Francisco on Monday night.
