After a thrilling first round of Varsity Netball, day two had a lot to live up to and it most certainly did, UFS Kovsies getting Round Two action underway as they took on NWU Netball in the first fixture of the day, at the Wits Sports Hall in Johannesburg on Monday, 2 September 2024.
The Free State side made it two wins from two matches as they were tested but emerged victorious with a 62-54 scoreline. It was hard to separate the two teams for much of the game but Kovsies managed to absorb the pressure which saw them win on Monday, 2 September 2024.
Maties secured their first win of the tournament and compounded TUT Netball’s misery in the process. The team from Stellenbosch sealed the 77-13 win and this meant TUT fell to their second defeat in as many games.
Maties were quick to settle in this fixture and this set a good starting point to build on for the rest of the match and by halftime the Cape side had a 34-9 lead. TUT continued to struggle with the intensity of the game and had to succumb to another heavy defeat on Monday evening.
Maties vice-captain Chrisley Marshall was named Player of the Match for her strong performance. Speaking on Varsity Netball’s X page, she shared how much this victory means to her and her team.
“I feel amazing and so grateful to her here and to be able to play so much better than yesterday. We team showed we have what it takes and can improve from here.”

“It’s not nice losing your first match, it also brings you back to that place of wanting to come up in the next game and showing you can improve we just building on everything we have done so far and hopefully the upcoming weekends can be better”, Marshall added.
UJ Netball locked horns with Madibaz Netball in the third game of the day and last year’s runners-up got a solid 72-35 victory. The team from Johannesburg put their mark on the match early on in the proceedings and by half time had a healthy 43-13 lead.

The final match of the day was billed as a humdinger and it certainly delivered in that aspect! After a sensational win in their first match, reigning champions Tuks followed that up with another amazing 64-49 win, this time against Wits Netball.
The two teams were neck-and-neck at 14-all in the first quarter, the Pretoria side then put their foot on the gas and upped the ante taking a 25-33 lead into halftime and it was in the third quarter that Tuks took hold of the game as they ascended to a 54-32 scoreline. Wits fought hard in the final 15 minutes but Tuks proved too strong.
