Two Amazing Paralympic athletes – runblogrun

There are two para-athletics events that never cease to amaze me. I aim to describe these events without sounding patronizing or presenting para-athletics as a spectacle. The first event that captivates me is the T12 long jump.

Oksana Zubkovska claimed the Paralympic title with an impressive leap of 5.78m. Despite being visually impaired, she embarks on her run-up, gathers herself, accelerates down the runway, takes flight, and lands over five meters away. It’s worth noting that Oksana is completely blind. Just imagine the courage it takes to launch yourself into the unknown – truly a leap of faith! She relies on guidance from a helper and the sound of directions to align herself. It’s a remarkable display of determination and bravery that sets para-long jumpers apart.

These instances showcase the unique challenges faced by para-athletes. Oksana’s prowess is not just a result of rigorous training and practice but also a testament to her unwavering determination and courage, qualities that set her apart from typical athletes.

Ezra Frech clinched the T63 high jump in Paris with a jump of 1.94m. A touching sentiment shared by someone resonates with the spirit of this event: “We should not question why a one-legged individual chooses to attempt high jump; we should simply appreciate that they do.” The T63 high jump stands out as one of the most captivating events in para-athletics, showcasing the extraordinary talents of athletes with limb deficiencies who compete with unmatched courage and skill.

Former world champion Sam Crewe once revealed, “There are several jumping styles in high jump due to its versatility and individual challenges. Each athlete adapts based on their strengths and weaknesses. The amputee high jump fascinates people – watching athletes on running blades or leaping effectively over daunting heights captivates and inspires.” This flexibility and adaptability in competition make the para-high jump a truly remarkable and inspiring event.

Silver medalist Kumar expressed his enthusiasm for one-legged high jump, calling it a remarkable experience to witness or partake in. He highlighted the lack of awareness and attention this event receives despite the incredible feats achieved, urging for more education and understanding. Kumar’s journey began at a young age, honing his skills over 15 years and excelling in high jump despite facing unique challenges.

While athletes like Crewe experiment with various jumping styles, Kumar has remained loyal to his method, influenced by his training background and the coaches he works with. He emphasizes the importance of familiarity and comfort in one’s approach, acknowledging the limitations imposed by individual body dynamics.

The para-athletics community harbors a wealth of untold stories and incredible discipline, exemplifying a blend of exceptional skill and sheer bravery that defines the essence of this domain.
