Do you remember the good old days when Paige Bueckers and Aaliyah Edwards dominated the college basketball scene together at the University of Connecticut? Well, you must since those were the days when the duo, part of the 2020 recruiting class, helped the Huskies win the Big East Conference titles four times in a row. Fast forward to the present and it’s heartwarming to see that the UConn sisterhood is alive and well, going beyond courts, teams, and titles.
In a thrilling matchup that harkened back to her UConn days, Edwards, the No. 8 seed, took on the formidable Breanna Stewart, the No. 1 seed and two-time WNBA MVP. But Edwards was not intimidated by the odds. She dug deep, calling upon the same fierce competitiveness that made her a fan favorite at UConn.
The result was a performance for the ages. Edwards nailed a corner triple after a couple of jab steps and then broke down Stewart to get to her spot by the elbow for a pull-up middy. Her soft touch on the reverse layup left Stewart struggling to keep up. In the end, Edwards emerged victorious, with a stunning 12-0 sweep that left Stewart scoreless.

The tight-knit community of UConn teammates is a beautiful thing, and social media often gives us a glimpse into the lasting friendships that are forged on and off the court. This past October, Aaliyah Edwards and Nika Muhl added to the list, as they cheered on Bueckers ahead of her senior season.
As Paige Bueckers geared up for her senior season at UConn with a college photoshoot, she posted a series of pictures that featured her rocking the Huskies uniform. The post was met with a wave of enthusiasm from her former teammates. Humorously welcoming her, Edwards commented, “Auntie Paige szn👵🏻”. While Muhl hyped Bueckers up with her energetic comment, “Year 10 here we gooooo”.

But let’s not forget though that at UConn, camaraderie and competition go hand-in-hand. Their culture of friendly rivalries was on full display when Edwards playfully challenged Bueckers to a matchup in the same video that highlighted her standout performance.
Paige Bueckers reveals her WNBA 1-on-1 bucket list
UConn Huskies guard Paige Bueckers recently took to Instagram to reveal her top five picks for a one-on-one challenge in the Unrivaled Basketball League. The 6-foot collegiate star named Dallas Wings guard Arike Ogunbowale and Washington Mystics forward Aaliyah Edwards as two of her ideal matchups. Bueckers cited Ogunbowale’s exceptional 1-on-1 skills as the reason she’d love to face her first. “I feel like she would challenge my defensive skills,” Bueckers said. “She’s one of the best 1-on-1 players in the league.”

On the other hand, Bueckers’ motivation for playing Edwards was more lighthearted. “Then, I would say, I wanna play Aaliyah Edwards one-on-one, because she’s my former teammate and she can’t guard me,” Bueckers joked. However, it seems like Edwards has given Bueckers a reason to put her at the top of the list. Right after winning against Stewart, she responded with a bold invitation, “Paige, come for me next bro“.
With Paige Bueckers expected to join the Unrivaled League in 2026 and with challenges flying back and forth, one thing is for sure- the exciting prospects are not ending anytime soon.
