Minnesota Lynx star Napheesa Collier is at risk of missing out on representing Team USA in the Olympics this summer after being sidelined in recent WNBA games due to injury
Minnesota Lynx star Napheesa Collier is playing at an MVP level in the WNBA this season, but she may miss the Olympics due to injury concerns after being named to the official roster last month.
Collier missed the 74-67 win over the Washington Mystics due to plantar fasciitis in her left foot. With no set timeline for her return, there are worries as Team USA gears up for the Paris Olympics.
Collier led the Lynx to victory in the Commissioner’s Cup final and was named MVP against the New York Liberty. She has been a top-five WNBA MVP candidate twice in her first five seasons, averaging 20 points, 10.2 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 2.2 steals per game this season as she showcases her skills on both ends of the court.
Leading up to the Olympics, the Lynx have four games left before the All-Star Game in Phoenix, where Collier is set to play for Team USA against Team WNBA. U.S. and Minnesota head coach Cheryl Reeve mentioned Collier is racing against time to be fit for the Olympics, with her recovery closely monitored.
Reeve said, “It’s certainly on our minds… The situation she’s in, it’s best for us to just take it day by day.”
Collier has battled plantar fasciitis throughout her college career at UConn and faced discomfort in her foot during a recent game against the Connecticut Sun.
