Umar Nurmagomedov will have the opportunity to showcase his contender status against Cory Sandhagen at UFC Abu Dhabi this weekend (Sat., Aug. 3, 2024).
The Bantamweight division remains competitive and thrilling as we approach the second half of 2024, with contenders vying for a shot at the upcoming title fight at Noche UFC on Sept. 14, 2024.
Facing the No. 2-ranked Sandhagen will be a significant challenge for Nurmagomedov, who is currently ranked first. A win could lead to a title opportunity against the winner of the Sean O’Malley vs. Merab Dvalishvili championship match.
“I hope to fight next; they have indicated that I will face the winner [between O’Malley and Dvalishvili],” Nurmagomedov stated to MMA Junkie. “Yes, [they assured me that I am next].”
Nurmagomedov, aged 28, has maintained a flawless record in his 17-fight career. The impending clash with Sandhagen was previously scheduled in Nashville, Tennessee last year (Aug. 5, 2023), but Nurmagomedov had to withdraw due to injury. Sandhagen went on to defeat Rob Font via unanimous decision.
As for the title fight, Nurmagomedov is uncertain about the victor but doubts that O’Malley or Dvalishvili are eager to face him.
“I believe they are hoping to avoid fighting me,” Nurmagomedov remarked. “They are likely wishing for me to withdraw and miss the chance to compete for the title. It doesn’t matter to me who emerges victorious. It will be a tough fight for both, considering one is a wrestler and the other a striker with height and weight advantages. Stylistically, it’s challenging for me to predict the winner. I can’t say for sure.”
