There are numerous cage fights happening every weekend worldwide, with a mix of both exciting and mundane encounters. Only a very small percentage will have the perfect blend of elements that make them unforgettable for years to come. What constitutes that special mix? It’s subjective and depends on the beholder. In my opinion, the ideal fight should showcase exceptional heart and determination, shifts in momentum, and a certain level of technical skill. A prime example is the 2022 battle between Jiri Prochazka and Glover Teixeira, which I find to be a perfect viewing experience.
Let’s take a look at the “Fights of the Year” for 2024.
5. Alex Pereira vs. Khalil Rountree
I believe a significant aspect of what made this fight exceptional was the element of surprise. Initially, nobody was excited about the fight. Magomed Ankalaev seemed like a more deserving opponent for a title shot than Khalil Rountree, and it was frustrating that he was being set up for an easy knockout by Pereira. However, Rountree had other plans. He put up a fierce fight for two rounds, landing powerful shots and nearly knocking his opponent out with a high kick. Pereira launched a fierce comeback in the third round, dominating Rountree with sharp jabs and body hooks as Rountree’s pace slowed down. The conclusion was evident going into the fourth round, with Rountree too exhausted to stand against the heavy-handed Pereira. Despite this, Rountree fought like a warrior until his body gave in, ending his unlikely bid for the title.
