Clark expressed to the police that she was concerned for her safety and had changed her appearance in public after receiving the messages on X.
Authorities in Indianapolis, USA, have filed a felony charge against a man from Texas for stalking Women’s NBA player Caitlin Clark.
Michael Thomas Lewis is accused of repeatedly harassing the 22-year-old Clark starting on December 16, according to court documents from the Marion County prosecutor’s office. Lewis is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday.
The affidavit from a Marion County sheriff’s lieutenant stated that Lewis had posted multiple messages on Clark’s X account.
Some of the messages included details about Lewis driving past Gainbridge Fieldhouse multiple times a day and making sexually explicit remarks directed at Clark.
According to prosecutors, these posts caused Clark to feel threatened and fear for her safety, with an implied threat of sexual assault.
Lewis could potentially face six years in prison and a $10,000 fine if found guilty.
The FBI identified Lewis as the owner of the X account and traced the messages to IP addresses linked to an Indianapolis hotel and public library.
During a meeting with Indianapolis police on January 8, Lewis claimed he was in the city for leisure and stated that he fantasized about having a relationship with Clark.
Prosecutors requested a higher bond for Lewis, citing his proximity to the victim when travelling from Texas to Indianapolis.
They also sought a stay-away order prohibiting Lewis from the locations where the Fever team plays home games.
Clark responded to the threats by expressing her fear for her safety and making changes to her public appearance.
The Marion County prosecutor emphasized the importance of women speaking out against such incidents and setting an example for a safe working environment.
Clark, a WNBA star who was the number one draft pick in 2024, has achieved great success in her career.
