The United States secured an exciting victory in the United Cup final on Sunday night in Sydney, claiming their second title in three years. Standout performances from Coco Gauff, the 2025 United Cup MVP, and Taylor Fritz led the team to victory against Poland, who suffered their second consecutive runner-up finish. The American duo delivered stellar wins to seal the championship in a memorable manner.
In a packed Ken Rosewall Arena, Gauff started with a remarkable 6-4 6-4 win over world No. 2 Iga Swiatek. Fritz followed with a thrilling 6-4 5-7 7-6(4) victory against Hubert Hurkacz, marked by powerful serving. The match featured 30 aces and only three break points.
Both Gauff and Fritz showcased their impressive 2024 form in the tournament, continuing their strong performances from the previous year. Gauff, who claimed the WTA Finals title in Riyadh with another win against Swiatek, remained undefeated in five United Cup singles matches. She begins the year ranked No. 3 in the PIF WTA Rankings. Fritz, reaching a career-high No. 4 in the PIF ATP Rankings, rebounded after an initial loss to Felix Auger-Aliassime in Perth to win his following four matches.
Swiatek, who had previously dominated their head-to-head with 11 wins in their first 13 meetings, struggled against Gauff’s improved serve and forehand, skills she developed under coach Matt Daly. These strengths proved crucial, as they did during Gauff’s WTA Finals triumph.
The first set was a physically demanding battle, with Gauff breaking Swiatek early but then dropping three consecutive games. Gauff’s consistency ultimately made the difference, as Swiatek’s 19 unforced errors exceeded Gauff’s nine.
The second set highlighted Gauff’s resilience. Despite a double fault on break point, she managed to break back in a challenging 10-minute game to level the score at 4-4. With momentum on her side, Gauff secured the final break to secure the win.
Throughout the United Cup, Gauff performed dominantly with victories over Leylah Fernandez, Donna Vekic, Zhang Shuai, Karolina Muchova, and Swiatek. (source: United Cup)
