First-time Olympians Rodman, Albert contribute to USWNT win
New USWNT manager Emma Hayes chose to stick with the same starting XI on Wednesday, with the only change being center-back Emily Sonnett replacing the injured Tierna Davidson. Despite already qualifying for the quarterfinal, the US faced an Australian low block with the Matildas unable to secure the necessary points to advance from Group B.
Trinity Rodman, a first-time Olympian, opened the scoring just before halftime, and substitute Korbin Albert scored the game-winning goal in the 77th minute. Alanna Kennedy pulled one back for the Matildas in the 91st minute, but the US held on to secure the victory.

Hayes’s focus on consistency led to the result but came with consequences, as midfielder Sam Coffey received her second group stage yellow card early in the match, making her unavailable for the quarterfinal against Japan.
Saturday’s match will determine the USWNT’s path to the semifinals, offering a chance at a medal.
